Role Overview A government hospital cleaner maintains the cleanliness, hygiene, and infection‑control standards of public hospitals, district hospitals, regional hospitals, tertiary hospitals, and community health centres operated by the South African Department of Health across all nine provinces. Responsibilities Clean and disinfect wards, casualty areas, operating theatres, ICU, and other clinical and non‑clinical areas. Maintain infection‑control standards by following SOPs and work instructions. Work various shifts, including weekends and public holidays, as required. Salary and Employee Benefits Entry‑level government hospital cleaner (Salary Level 2) – ZAR 4,500–6,000 per month. Experienced government hospital cleaner (Salary Level 3) – ZAR 6,000–8,000 per month. Specialised area cleaner – theatre, ICU, or infectious disease ward – ZAR 6,500–9,000 per month. Cleaning team leader – ZAR 8,500–12,000 per month. Cleaning supervisor – ZAR 12,000–16,500 per month. Hospital Types and Cleaning Opportunities District Hospitals: The first level of hospital care in the public health system, serving local communities with general medical, surgical, maternity, and paediatric services. They require consistent cleaning across wards, outpatient departments, casualty areas, and restroom facilities. Regional Hospitals: Serving larger population catchment areas with more specialised care, including general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, and paediatrics. Cleaning needs span multiple wards, specialist outpatient clinics, operating theatre suites, and high‑care units. Tertiary and Academic Hospitals: The highest level of public hospital care, including teaching hospitals affiliated with South African universities. These facilities have complex infection‑control requirements across highly specialised clinical units such as transplant, burns, cardiothoracic, and neurosurgery departments. Community Health Centres (CHCs): Primary care facilities providing outpatient consultations, maternal and child health services, chronic disease management, and emergency stabilisation. CHCs require regular and thorough cleaning across consultation rooms, waiting areas, pharmacy dispensing areas, and restrooms. Qualifications and Skills No formal qualification required for entry‑level positions. Grade 10 or Grade 12 preferred for Salary Level 2 and above. Good communication skills in at least one of the official languages of the relevant province is advantageous. Previous cleaning experience in a hospital, clinic, or healthcare environment is advantageous. Basic understanding of infection‑control procedures and healthcare hygiene protocols preferred. Ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instructions for public healthcare cleaning. Reliability, physical fitness, and the ability to work shifts including weekends and public holidays.
