Introduction NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) | FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES - DESMOND TUTU SCHOOL OF MEDICINE | POSITION NUMBER: P | VACANCY: SENIOR LECTURER IN MEDICAL PHYSIOLOGY | PEROMNES GRADE: A7 | EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT Duties & Responsibilities Purpose of the Position To Positioned within the foundational phase The primary purpose of the Senior Lecturer in Medical Physiology is to develop and deliver integrated physiological knowledge that underpins understanding of human function in both health and disease, and to facilitate conceptual coherence across disciplines by supporting links between physiology, anatomy, biochemistry, and clinical skills. In an integrated, spiral curriculum, physiology is not taught as an isolated subject but as a core explanatory science. Strategic importance to the MBChB programme The Senior Lecturer in Medical Physiology is strategically positioned to ensure scientific rigour in the curriculum, strengthen clinical relevance from year 1, support the development of competent, reflective, and systems‑aware graduates and contribute to the success of the spiral curriculum model. This role directly impacts student success and retention, quality of clinical reasoning in later years and alignment with accreditation standards (HPCSA). Contribution to curriculum development (first 18 months) The Senior Lecturer is a key contributor to the design, mapping, and continuous refinement of the foundational curriculum. This includes integrated curriculum design with learning outcome development. Contribution to teaching and learning The Senior Lecturer is responsible for delivering innovative, student‑centred teaching that supports deep learning through various teaching modalities, where possible integrating and developing clinical reasoning and assessment. Integration into the Biomedical Sciences team The Senior Lecturer is required to integrate and collaborate closely with the Anatomists, Biochemists, and Clinicians, participate in module teams and curriculum committees, and support interdisciplinary collaboration. Contribution to educational innovation The Senior Lecturer requires active engagement in modern health professions education approaches for 21st‑century learning, including digital learning platforms and blended learning; contributing to instructional design, developing e‑learning materials, simulations, and visual tools; implementing innovative mechanisms to monitor student progress; and engaging in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). Contribution to student development and student success In the foundational phase, the Senior Lecturer contributes to providing academic support and mentoring for first- and second‑year students; to the early development of professional identity; and to supporting students in transitioning to self‑directed learning. Key Responsibilities Teaching and Learning Develop and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in medical physiology within the MBChB and future programmes. Facilitate lectures, large‑and‑small‑group teaching, practicals, programmatic assessment, progress testing, etc. Contribute to student assessment, curriculum integration, continuous improvement of learning resources, and the adoption of technology‑enhanced learning to ensure medical physiology aligns with the 21st‑century learner. Curriculum Development and Academic Leadership Participate in the design and review of the MBChB curriculum. Develop innovative teaching strategies, contribute to interdisciplinary teaching, ensure alignment with HPCSA requirements, and international best practice in medical physiology education. Research Conduct discipline‑relevant research in physiology or related biomedical sciences. Publish in accredited journals, participate in national and international conferences, supervise postgraduate students, and contribute to the research output of the School of Medicine. Postgraduate Student Supervision and Student Support Supervise postgraduate studies (M and D) where applicable. Provide support, mentorship, and guidance to undergraduate MBChB students. Community Engagement Serve on faculty and university committees and contribute to professional organizations to strengthen socially accountable medical education. Ad Hoc Tasks Given that the Medical School is a new venture, join the team in various ad hoc tasks to optimise the school’s operationalisation. Desired Experience & Qualification A PhD in Physiology/Medical Physiology or any relevant field (NQF level 10). A master’s degree in Physiology/Medical Physiology or any relevant field (NQF level 9). A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in independent module teaching and assessment in higher education. Accredited peer‑reviewed research publications. Added Advantages A postgraduate qualification in Health Professions Education or Medical Education (NQF level 7). Memberships with The Physiological Society of Southern Africa (PSSA). Master’s and Doctoral supervision. Experience in biomedical, medical, or health sciences curriculum design. Key Functional/Technical Competencies Expertise in medical physiology and molecular biology. Biomedical laboratory teaching, including digital technologies. Experiences in medical education and curriculum development. Research methodology and academic writing. Student assessment and moderation. Learning management systems and educational technologies. Remuneration The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
