TGB02/121/0526 Clinical Mycobacteriology And Epidemiology (CLIME) Group The Clinical Mycobacteriology and Epidemiology (CLIME) Research Group, based at the Tygerberg Campus of Stellenbosch University (SU), specialises in tuberculosis (TB) research with a primary focus on diagnostics. Our diagnostic cohorts provide specimens that support a range of research themes, including TB transmission, the microbiome, and drug resistance. Participant recruitment for our studies is conducted within the Cape Metropole, particularly in the Northern District. Specimens are processed and characterised either in on‑site mobile laboratories or at our campus facilities. Much of this work is carried out within multinational consortia, several of which are led by the CLIME Research Group. About The Role The Senior Research Nurse is responsible for the clinical execution of research protocols, acting as the primary point of contact for participant recruitment, medical consent, and specimen collection. This role requires a meticulous professional who can balance high-level clinical skills with the administrative rigor required for Good Clinical Practice (GCP). The Research Nurse ensures that all clinical activities are conducted within project timelines and maintains the critical link between the community, the clinical site, and the laboratory. Duties/Pligte 1. Clinical Recruitment and Ethical Oversight Participant Management: Leading patient recruitment efforts, and ensuring that all activities are conducted according to study protocols and scheduled timelines. Informed Consent: Managing the Informed Consent (ICF) process in strict accordance with GCP guidelines, ensuring that participants are fully informed and ethically screened. Protocol Adherence: Maintaining expert‑level knowledge of all Study Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure the integrity of the clinical trial. Clinical Procedures and Specimen Collection Biological Sampling: Obtaining various patient specimens (e.g. blood, sputum) according to specific project requirements and safety standards. Technical Handling: Ensuring the correct labelling, packaging, and preparation of specimens for transport to the laboratory. Specialised Care: Providing HIV testing and counselling where necessary, maintaining a high standard of patient care and confidentiality. New Project Implementation: Assisting in the rollout and implementation of new projects at field sites, demonstrating flexibility across multiple research studies. Data Integrity and Documentation Meticulous Record Keeping: Maintaining comprehensive patient files, including Case Report Forms (CRFs), ICFs, and clinical results. Quality Control: Conducting regular quality checks on patient files to ensure they are audit‑ready, and managing patient remuneration records accurately. Digital Systems: Performing timely data entry into REDCap and other electronic databases to ensure real‑time study tracking. Coordination and Resource Management Interdisciplinary Communication: Maintaining constant contact with laboratory personnel regarding specimen status and with the driver for patient transport and house visits. Team Leadership: Working closely with Community Health Workers (CHWs) and students to oversee recruitment statistics and to provide feedback to the Principal Investigator (PI). Supply Chain Support: Monitoring clinical stock levels for daily operations and reporting requirements to the Laboratory Manager to prevent disruptions. Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes Education: Bachelor’s degree (postgraduate preferred), or a diploma in nursing, public health, or a related field. Licensing: Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC). Experience: At least two years of relevant clinical experience – prior experience as a research nurse will be highly advantageous. Languages: Fluency in English is required, and proficiency in Afrikaans and/or isiXhosa will be a significant advantage. Certifications: Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training.
