JOB TYPE: Full-Time (In Office) LOCATION: South Africa, Somerset West REPORT TO: Electronic Lead Key Purpose of Job We are looking for a highly skilled Senior Optical Design Engineer to take the lead in designing world‑class optics for our cutting‑edge space products. Key Tasks Lead the optical design of NSS products from concept through full product lifecycle Use Zemax or similar tools for design, optimisation, and tolerancing of optical systems Conduct trade studies to support informed design decisions Collaborate with the Project Manager to plan and manage integration, qualification, and testing Simulate and test designs to ensure robust performance with adequate design margins Serve as Technical Lead during development and Design Authority throughout the product lifecycle Ensure adherence to systems engineering standards and the internal Business Management System Identify, report, manage, and mitigate technical risks Define clear, comprehensive optical system requirements Represent NSS in client discussions on requirements and proposals Mentor and support Design Engineers and Intern Engineers Prerequisites Qualifications & Experience A BSc or BEng degree from a recognised institution Additional training in Optical Engineering or Optical Design is an advantage 5+ years’ experience in similar role Competencies & Skills Technical Skills Proficiency in optical design software (Zemax, Code V, or equivalent) Strong understanding of geometrical and physical optics Experience with optical tolerancing, optimisation, and performance simulation Knowledge of optical materials, coatings, and manufacturing processes Ability to perform trade‑off analyses and technical feasibility studies Experience with system engineering principles and requirements development Understanding of integration, verification, and qualification testing Familiarity with space environment constraints (thermal, vibration, radiation) is advantageous Ability to interpret and create technical documentation, drawings, and specifications Competence in data analysis, modelling, and technical reporting Behavioural Competencies Proactive and self‑driven, able to take ownership of projects High level of professional integrity and accountability Customer‑focused approach with the ability to engage professionally with clients Adaptable to evolving project needs and technological advancements #J-18808-Ljbffr
