Role Purpose This role is accountable for the conveyance of people, material and ore which include slinging material from and to surface by means of a winding engine. Responsibilities include ensuring effective and efficient movement of men, materials and ore in a safe manner. Key Responsibilities Adhere to working schedules which include overtime and standby. Complete and pass assessments and medical screening as per schedules. Physically operate the winding engine to hoist and lower men, materials and ore in the shaft in compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act chapter 16 and the SPG (Standards, Procedures and Guidelines). Perform non‑routine work on the winders with engineering teams (e.g., changing conveyances, cutting front and back ends and shaft repairs). Identify electrical and/or mechanical faults picked up during operation of the winding plant, report them to responsible artisans and foremen. Identify operational problems and emergencies and act in accordance with specified requirements within area of responsibility. Operate winding engines both AC and DC winders. Maintain operator logbook and complete it accordingly. Be conversant with the Mine Health and Safety Act and any applicable Company or management instructions. Reset automatic hoist when trip‑outs occur to ensure a minimum delay in hoisting time. Record conditions of the winding engine daily and complete driver’s logbook as required. List stoppages, call‑outs and reasons daily. Perform other tasks as allocated by the supervisor within his/her area of responsibility. Assist engineering team with all legal inspections required on the winding engine including dailies, weeklies, engineer trips and shaft examinations. Legal Compliance Adhere to regulations and special instructions (site specific). Identify and report non‑compliance incidents. Identify hazards and take remedial measures to prevent accidents/incidents during winding operations. Use signals in an appropriate manner. Participate and assist during audits conducted on machinery. Adhere to the MHS Act rules and regulations. Adhere to any special instructions issued by the responsible engineer. Reporting & Administration Report all incidents and/or accidents pertaining to the winder and/or shaft to the responsible Section Engineer and foreman. Complete relevant documentation required. Stakeholder Relations Maintain relationships with stakeholders. Ensure open communication channels with all relevant stakeholders. Financial Management – Cost Savings Adhere to cost‑saving and cash‑conservation initiatives. Ensure efficient operation of the winding plant to save cost on maintenance and utilities where possible. ESG Compliance Align to international responsible mining principles. Align to World Gold Council (WGC) Responsible Gold Mining Principles (RGMPs) for SA Gold Operations. Enhance Together for Sustainability (eTfS) initiative for SA PGM Operations. Enhance together for ICCM principles for US PGM Operations. SHE Compliance Maintain and comply with SHERQ standards within the work environment. Participate in risk assessments and investigate and take appropriate action as per identified risks. Role Requirements – Minimum Qualifications: NQF 4 (National Senior Certificate or Grade 12 or National Senior Certificate for Adults); Recognized Winding Engine Driver certificate issued by the DMR; Certificate must be valid and evidence of driving a winder in the last 2 years as an appointed WED; Onsetter’s Certificate. Experience: At least 1–2 years’ experience as a Winding Engine Driver on AC and DC machines or proof of competence for newly qualified WED (advantageous); 2–3 years’ experience as an Onsetter. Legal: Medically fit to work in the specific business area; clear security screening record; valid driver’s licence (if applicable).
