Introduction Our client, a leading seafood processing and distributing company in Atlantis on the West Coast, wants to appoint a Junior OHS Officer. The person will be responsible to implement and maintain comprehensive health and safety management systems that ensure uncompromising legislative compliance with the OHS Act, while upholding the rigorous food safety and hygiene standards required for IFS and NRCS certifications within a high-output seafood processing environment. Please note the company is located in Atlantis which is located on the Western Seaboard close to Blaauwberg, Melkbosstrand, Parklands, West Beach, and the Malmesbury/Swartland district. Candidates with experience in administration of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) systems in the protein manufacturing industries, such as meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, eggs and animal feed should apply. Duties & Responsibilities Responsibilities: Implement and maintain health and safety management systems in line with the OHS Act and industry standards. Conduct regular risk assessments to identify hazards specific to food manufacturing, such as wet and slippery floors, sharp machinery/tools (cutting/de-boning), and exposure to cold storage and chemicals. Conduct comprehensive incident and accident/near-misses investigations, utilising root-cause analysis to provide actionable preventative recommendations and file reports with authorities such as the Compensation Commissioner (COIDA). Coordinate mandatory health and safety training (i.e. first aid, fire fighting, evacuation marshal, etc.) and facilitate awareness sessions on various related health and safety topics. Collaborate with the Quality teams to ensure safety protocols (e.g., chemical usage for cleaning) do not compromise HACCP- or Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards. Assume primary responsibility for the implementation and maintenance of OHS protocols to ensure 100% alignment with the OHS Act. Manage the end-to-end lifecycle of the "Safety File," ensuring all OHS-related paperwork is accurately executed, distributed to stakeholders, and archived for audit readiness. Research, draft, and implement comprehensive SHE policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to bridge operational gaps. Monitor the validity of all statutory certificates, including Electrical COCs and lifting equipment permits. Ensure all health and safety activities adhere to Food Safety management programs (HACCP), specifically regarding sanitary equipment and hygiene standards. Chair and facilitate the Safety Committee meetings, ensure accurate minute-taking and the proactive tracking of technical action lists. Draft and issue formal safety notices, warnings, and internal communication regarding OHS updates. Ensure vendor compliance by conducting safety vetting for all third-party suppliers, including the rigorous review of Health & Safety files, COIDA compliance, and Letters of Good Standing (LOGS). Research and implement new policies and procedures to ensure the business remains at the forefront of safety excellence. Conduct on-the-job Training (OJT) and safety inductions for new employees and contractors. Desired Experience & Qualification Requirements: Grade 12 Candidates with experience in administration of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) systems in the protein manufacturing industries, such as meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, eggs and animal feed should apply. Relevant tertiary qualification in Occupational Health and Safety or Safety Management is advantageous. Possession of a SAMTRAC or NEBOSH International General Certificate is essential. Familiarity with HACCP principles and the General Machinery Regulations (GMR). Registration with a recognised professional body (e.g., SAIOSH) is beneficial. Computer literacy in Ms Office 365 (Outlook, Excel, Word and Teams). At least 1-3 years’ work experience in a similar role within an FMCG/manufacturing environment. Exposure in the food processing industry is advantageous. Deep understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations. Knowledge of NRCS and IFS standards (including audits) is advantageous. Working hours Mon – Fri: 08:00 – 17:30 Hours may fluctuate due to operational requirements. Weekends/public holidays will be required as well as occasional partial night shift coverage (between 17:30 – 03:00) to ensure health and safety compliance across all shifts.
