Role Overview We are seeking a skilled COBOL Developer to design, develop, maintain, and support enterprise-grade applications running on mainframe platforms. The successful candidate will work on mission‑critical systems that support high‑volume transactional processing in industries such as banking, insurance, and financial services. The role requires strong expertise in COBOL programming, mainframe technologies, and legacy system modernization , along with the ability to analyze business requirements and translate them into reliable, high‑performance software solutions. The developer will collaborate with business analysts, system architects, testers, and operations teams to ensure the stability, scalability, and maintainability of core systems. Key Responsibilities Application Development Design, develop, and enhance applications using COBOL on mainframe environments . Build and maintain batch and online programs supporting critical enterprise processes. Develop and maintain JCL scripts to manage batch jobs and data processing workflows. Integrate COBOL programs with database systems such as DB2 or IMS . Participate in system modernization initiatives and legacy application transformation. System Maintenance & Support Maintain and enhance existing mainframe applications and legacy systems . Perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis for system defects and performance issues. Provide production support and ensure minimal downtime for business‑critical systems. Implement patches, upgrades, and improvements to existing systems. Database & Data Management Write and optimize SQL queries for DB2 databases . Manage data processing workflows involving VSAM, DB2, or IMS databases . Ensure data integrity, consistency, and performance in database operations. Integration & Interfaces Develop system interfaces between mainframe systems and distributed platforms . Support integration with web services, APIs, and modern middleware platforms where required. Work with integration teams to support enterprise‑wide data exchange. Testing & Quality Assurance Develop unit tests and system test scripts for COBOL applications. Support system integration testing (SIT) and user acceptance testing (UAT) . Ensure applications meet performance, reliability, and security standards . Documentation & Standards Maintain clear technical documentation for systems, programs, and processes. Follow enterprise coding standards, development frameworks, and governance practices . Participate in peer reviews and code quality assurance processes. Technical Skills & Competencies Core Technologies COBOL programming JCL (Job Control Language) CICS (Customer Information Control System) DB2 database VSAM (Virtual Storage Access Method) Mainframe Platforms IBM z/OS mainframe environments TSO/ISPF Endevor / Changeman / ISPW (or similar source control tools) Development & Tools Mainframe development tools and compilers SQL for DB2 Debugging and performance analysis tools Batch scheduling tools (e.g., Control‑M, CA‑7) Integration Technologies (Advantageous) Mainframe APIs and middleware MQ Series / IBM MQ Legacy modernization frameworks Java or distributed system integration knowledge Required Experience Minimum 3–5 years of experience in COBOL development (more for senior roles). Strong experience working in mainframe environments (IBM z/OS) . Hands‑on experience with CICS, JCL, and DB2 . Experience working on high‑volume transactional systems . Exposure to financial services, insurance, or banking systems is advantageous. Experience supporting production systems and troubleshooting issues . Education Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering , or a related field. Equivalent industry experience may be considered.
