Overview Research and Training Coordinator (Post Level 9) – Tygerberg Campus, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Department of Pathology, Division of Medical Virology. Ref: TGB07/118/0526. The position is supervised by a small complement of senior academic staff and is primarily funded by external grants (NIH, NRF, PRF, NHLS Research Trust, SA‑MRC, etc.). The role coordinates and oversees the research laboratories for cell culture, virus isolation, immunology, antibody testing, molecular virology and sequencing. It also manages equipment, stocks, the Stellenbosch University asset register, regulatory matters, and the biosafety level 3 (BSL3) laboratory. Responsibilities Maintain an optimally functioning laboratory working environment, managing facilities, instrumentation, stocks, cold storage, and ensuring compliance with good laboratory practice. Handle registration requirements in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including the National Department of Health, the National Department of Agriculture, the Institutional Research Ethics Committee (REC: BEE), Occupational Health and Safety, and other relevant bodies. Liaise with relevant internal and external bodies and structures within Stellenbosch University and beyond. Compose, review and update standard operating procedures (SOPs). Control and supervise reagent stocks and storage facilities. Monitor and arrange servicing, maintenance, and calibration of instruments and apparatuses. Determine when upgrades to instruments and apparatuses are required. Compile and manage rotation duty lists, such as checkpoints and liquid nitrogen tank refills. Maintain the Stellenbosch University asset register for the research and academic section of the Division of Medical Virology. Train undergraduate and postgraduate students and interns in laboratory safety and good laboratory practice to national and international standards. Train students, interns, and laboratory assistants in the use of laboratory information management systems, including booking of facilities and equipment, and managing stocks and storage facilities. Expand the scope of laboratory oversight to facilities located outside the physical Medical Virology environment as required by projects. Address accreditation requirements as and when needed. Occasionally attend to out‑of‑hours emergency calls, such as during power failures. Qualifications A technical degree or diploma in a relevant discipline. At least two years of laboratory experience, preferably in a virological or molecular biology laboratory. Experience in performing research‑related tasks, such as the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs). Strong writing and communication skills. Strong interpersonal and conflict‑management skills. Strong time‑management and organisational skills. Preferred Qualifications MSc degree in a relevant field. Prior experience in laboratory management and coordination. HPCSA registration as a biomedical scientist. Prior experience in biosafety level 2 and 3 laboratory work.
