The Pricing Intelligence Specialist is responsible delivering end-to-end analytical and tactical pricing execution within assigned categories, driving competitive positioning and margin optimization in support of Massmart’s Everyday Low Price (EDLP) and promotional strategies. The role is also required to translate data insights into commercial pricing decisions, ensuring pricing data accuracy, competitor visibility, and actionable insights that directly support category and banner-level pricing outcomes. Pricing Analysis and Execution Manage the analytical and tactical execution of pricing activities for assigned categories, ensuring alignment with EDLP and promotional strategies. Use data-driven analysis and elasticity models to recommend pricing actions that balance competitiveness, margin, and price perception. Perform post-event impact reviews of pricing and promotional decisions to assess ROI and identify optimisation opportunities. Exercise independent judgment within established pricing governance parameters when adjusting or proposing price changes Competitor and Market Intelligence Lead competitor benchmarking and price-gap analysis within assigned category clusters, using external data feeds and internal pricing tools. Interpret competitive insights and market trends to recommend proactive adjustments to maintain Massmart’s price position. Present pricing insights and recommendations to merchants, planners, and the Pricing leadership team. Maintain accuracy of competitor pricing datasets and monitor shifts impacting category performance or price perception. Pricing Strategy and Merchandising Analytics Own the integrity of pricing data within assigned categories, ensuring compliance with Massmart’s pricing governance and control standards. Collaborate with IT and Data Science teams to automate reporting and improve pricing system efficiency. Maintain pricing dashboards and visualisation tools (Power BI, Tableau) that track performance and competitor positioning. Conduct data quality audits and ensure timely correction of discrepancies. Systems, Data Governance and Automation Proactively explore datasets, representing your industry group, and working with cross functional product teams to identify and test the suitable sources of data. Ensure pricing data integrity, governance, and accuracy within Massmart’s pricing systems. Maintain and enhance reporting tools and dashboards for ongoing pricing performance measurement. Support automation of pricing processes and reporting in collaboration with IT/Data Science teams. Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration Influence category and merchant teams by communicating pricing insights in a clear, commercially focused manner. Collaborate with Finance, Data Analytics and Commercial teams to quantify the impact of price changes and validate business cases. Participate in category trade reviews, articulating pricing performance and strategy alignment. Serve as the pricing point-of-contact for assigned categories, balancing merchant needs with strategic pricing objectives. Qualifications Matric (Grade 12) or equivalent – Required. Bachelor's Degree / Advanced Diploma in Mathematics/ Statistics, Computer Science/ Data Science/ Actuarial Science/ Business Mathematics/ Engineering related qualification. Honours / Post Graduate degree in Mathematics/ Statistics, Computer Science/ Data Science/ Actuarial Science/ Business Mathematics/ Engineering related qualification advantageous. Certification in analytics/ pricing strategy/ machine learning advantageous. Experience 4+ years’ experience in retail pricing, merchandising, analytics, or commercial roles (FMCG/wholesale/retail preferred). Experience with competitor intelligence, retail systems, or promotional analytics advantageous. Experience using BI tools, analytics platforms, and pricing intelligence systems. Competencies and Skills Interprets large datasets to make informed, financially sound recommendations. Balances analytical rigour with operational agility in implementing price actions. Builds partnerships across merchandising, finance, and data teams to drive pricing decisions. Anticipates market shifts and proactively adjusts pricing within governance parameters. Transforms complex pricing data into clear, persuasive insights for non-technical audiences. Understands competitor activity and customer value perception within category context.
