The Role: The IT Intern / Junior Administrator is an entry‑level role based at the Johannesburg branch of Henry Fagan Consulting Engineers & Project Managers. The successful candidate will play a supporting role to the IT Manager, assisting with the day‑to‑day running of IT operations across the business. Responsibilities include asset tracking, Microsoft 365 tenant support, end‑user support, and contributing to ongoing IT projects. The role is ideal for a motivated individual looking to launch a career in IT within a professional engineering and project management environment, and who is willing to travel to the Cape Town office when required to provide support or assist with projects. The role is developmental in nature and is intended to provide the incumbent with the required practical experience and professional exposure. Key Responsibilities: Asset Tracking and Management Maintain an accurate, up‑to‑date register of all IT assets, including laptops, desktops, peripherals, mobile devices, and network equipment. Track the full lifecycle of IT assets from procurement to deployment, reassignment, and decommissioning. Conduct regular audits to verify asset locations, conditions, and ownership across the Johannesburg and Cape Town offices. Assist with the procurement, receipt, and tagging of new IT equipment. Microsoft 365 Tenant Support: Assist with the administration of the company's Microsoft 365 tenant, including user account creation, license assignment, and group management. Support the configuration and maintenance of services such as Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Microsoft Teams. Help monitor tenant health, security alerts, and compliance settings under the guidance of the IT Manager. Assist with onboarding and offboarding processes, ensuring access is provisioned and revoked in line with company policy. End‑User Support: Act as a first point of contact for end‑user IT queries, logging and resolving tickets in a timely and professional manner. Troubleshoot hardware, software, and connectivity issues for staff at the Johannesburg office and remote users. Set up and configure workstations, laptops, printers, and mobile devices for new and existing employees. Manage the new‑user onboarding setup process, including provisioning Microsoft 365 accounts, configuring email and Teams, joining devices to the domain/tenant, and ensuring access to required applications and shared resources from day one. Prepare replacement laptops and workstations, including imaging, software installation, data migration from the user's previous device, and final handover to the end user. Provide basic training and guidance to staff on Microsoft 365 applications and company IT systems. Network and Printer Monitoring: Monitor the performance and availability of the office network, including switches, wireless access points, and internet connectivity, escalating issues to the IT Manager or relevant vendor where required. Monitor printers and multi‑function devices across the Johannesburg office, ensuring they remain online, stocked with consumables, and serviced as needed. Perform first‑line troubleshooting on network and print‑related faults and log calls with service providers when escalation is required. Assist with routine network administration tasks under the guidance of the IT Manager. Support to the IT Manager: Play a supporting role to the IT Manager on day‑to‑day operations and broader IT initiatives. Assist with the implementation of IT projects, including the upcoming office move, network upgrades, and the rollout of new systems. Help maintain documentation of IT infrastructure, procedures, and standard operating processes. Support security and compliance activities, including assisting with audits and the application of security best practices. Travel and Cross‑Office Support: Travel to the Cape Town office as and when required to provide on‑site support or assist with IT projects. Coordinate with staff in both offices to ensure consistent IT service delivery across the company. Qualifications and Experience: Mandatory: CompTIA A+ certification. CompTIA Network+ (N+) certification. Microsoft Certified Fundamental‑level certification — entry‑point Microsoft certification covering core concepts in areas such as Azure, Microsoft 365, or Security (e.g., AZ‑900, MS‑900, or SC‑900). Ideal for candidates new to Microsoft technologies. Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel to the Cape Town office for support and projects. Matric / Grade 12. Advantageous: Microsoft Certified Associate‑level certification — role‑based certification preparing candidates for positions such as Azure Administrator, Microsoft 365 Administrator, or Power Platform App Maker (e.g., AZ‑104, MS‑102, or PL‑100). Exposure to or studies towards an IT‑related qualification (Diploma or Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or similar). Previous internship, vacation work, or part‑time experience in an IT support environment. Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook). Skills and Attributes Strong customer‑service orientation with a friendly, patient, and professional manner. Good problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills. Solid working knowledge of the Microsoft 365 suite from an end‑user perspective. Familiarity with Windows operating systems and basic networking concepts. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English. Well organised, with attention to detail and the ability to keep accurate records. Self‑motivated, eager to learn, and able to take direction from the IT Manager. Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
