SAFETY OFFICER, Lephalale Limpopo Job Overview We are seeking a qualified, experienced, and highly motivated Safety Officer to join our Backfill Project team within an open cast coal mining environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for promoting and maintaining a strong safety culture while ensuring full compliance with applicable health, safety, environmental, and mining legislation. The role requires a proactive individual capable of working closely with operational teams to identify risks, implement corrective actions, and support continuous improvement in safety performance across the project. Key Responsibilities Ensure compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), client requirements, site procedures, and company safety standards. Conduct regular workplace inspections, hazard identification, and risk assessments. Monitor adherence to safe work procedures and permit‑to‑work systems. Facilitate safety inductions, toolbox talks, safety meetings, and awareness campaigns. Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe acts or conditions, and compile detailed reports. Maintain accurate SHEQ documentation, registers, inspection records, and safety statistics. Monitor implementation of corrective and preventative actions. Promote proper PPE usage and safe working practices across all operational areas. Participate in internal audits, client audits, and safety inspections. Assist in emergency preparedness and response activities. Support supervisors and management in achieving Zero Harm objectives. Promote a positive and proactive safety culture on site. Minimum Requirements Grade 12 / Matric certificate. National Diploma, Certificate, or equivalent qualification in Safety Management, Occupational Health & Safety, or related field. Valid SAMTRAC certificate or equivalent safety qualification. Minimum 3–5 years’ experience as a Safety Officer within the mining industry. Proven experience in open cast coal mining, rehabilitation, earthworks, or backfilling operations. Sound knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act and applicable mining regulations. Valid driver’s licence. Computer literacy in Microsoft Office applications. Good incident investigation and report‑writing skills. Medically fit to work on a mining site. Advantageous COMSOC 1 & 2 certificates. Registration with SACPCMP or relevant professional body. First Aid, Fire Fighting, and Incident Investigation certifications. Experience working on large‑scale mining rehabilitation or backfill projects. Knowledge and experience with ISO 45001 Safety Management Systems.
