Building Systems Technician (For Current SCC Students ONLY) Position Title: Building Systems Technician (For Current SCC Students ONLY) FLSA: exempt. Shift: Day/Evening. Supervisor Title: Maintenance Supervisor, Jerry Snow. Location: Main Campus (Dobson). This is a mid-level position in the Facilities Department managing building systems maintenance. The Building Systems Technician work‑study works under the immediate supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor or another assigned supervisor and may be assigned tasks in any and all aspects of facilities maintenance. Students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours to qualify for the Federal Work Study Program. This is a part‑time opportunity. Students may work up to 15 hours per week, depending on their unmet need on their FAFSA. Eligibility Requirements Current Surry Community College student (2026‑2027 academic year). Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours. Qualified for need‑based federal assistance through the Federal Work Study Program. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform general system repairs, renovations, and installations on plumbing, HVAC, electrical systems, fire alarms, kitchen equipment, air compressors, and college machinery. Operate equipment and tools while performing digging, landscaping, snow removal, and other assigned duties. Complete work orders as assigned and ensure the highest levels of quality and safety. Assist with periodic building inspections and perform preventive maintenance procedures. Respond to complaints, keep records, and submit reports of work completed and in progress. Maintain records and accounts of inventories of materials and tools. Participate in assigned tasks and accept other duties as needed. Participate in college activities such as emergency response activities, safety training, and other required training. Ensure compliance with regulations, including personal protection use, building codes, emergency egress codes, and OSHA standards. Attend training for employees and other maintenance personnel. Be available for critical system repairs, snow/ice removal, or emergency duty; work schedule will be adjusted accordingly. Saturday work may be required. Maintain a clean and safe work area. General Qualifications Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Basic knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment required for the maintenance, alteration and repair of buildings and for the maintenance and repair of electrical, plumbing, and heating and air conditioning equipment; recognized knowledge of trade practices in plumbing, electrical work, heating and air conditioning; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with college staff and faculty. Required Qualifications Proficiency in the use of a computer and essential software applications, including building management systems, email, work order software, and preventive maintenance software. Basic proficiency in word processing is required. Preferred Qualifications Valid NC driver’s license. Experience and working knowledge of trade practices in plumbing, electrical work, heating and air conditioning. Physical Demands Employees are regularly required to talk or hear, taste or smell, sit, use hands to handle objects or tools, and reach with hands and arms. Occasional standing, walking, climbing, or balancing is required. Employees must be able to lift or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. Employees may sometimes work near moving mechanical parts, in high precarious places, or outside in weather conditions and may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
