Job Title: Field Instructor (3 hours per week) – Contract appointment: 10 months (Feb to Oct) Overview The Department of Social Work at the University of the Free State seeks competent individuals to supervise and mentor fourth‑year social work students. Field Instructors are responsible for the three basic functions of supervision: administrative, educational, and supportive. Responsibilities Role Modelling : Students observe your conduct; adhere strictly to the SACSSP Code of Ethics, punctuality, and professional boundaries. Provide educational supervision (teaching skills/theory), supportive supervision (handling emotional impact), and administrative supervision (policy/procedure compliance). Maintain a positive, motivating attitude to buffer students against burnout and vicarious trauma. Supervise students at the following frequency:Semester 1: at least every 3 weeks (orientation & initial case conceptualisation). Semester 2: weekly for the first 4 weeks, then bi‑weekly (intensive phase supporting complex interventions). Assessment & Feedback:Grade student submissions and provide written feedback within 5 working days. Participate as a required member of the oral examination panel. Monitor clinical development and submit monthly progress reports to the Year Group Coordinator. Report any performance concerns immediately to the DSW. Inherent Job Requirements Bachelor of Social Sciences on NQF Level 8. Active registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) as a Social Worker (proof required). Minimum of three years' experience as a Social Worker. Proficiency in social work supervision models (e.g., Process Model, Developmental Perspective). Ability to assist during normal working hours. Permission from current employer/HOD to conduct additional work (proof required). Qualifications & Preferred Experience Experience as a field placement supervisor. Strong commitment to the social development practice approach. Willingness to go the extra mile for student clinical growth. Knowledge of theories taught by the UFS Department of Social Work. Compensation Remuneration: R per month per student (no additional benefits).
