Job Description The General Manager will provide strategic leadership for SANBI’s eleven National Botanical Gardens across eight provinces, driving the division’s management, development, and expansion initiatives. Roles and Responsibilities Provide strategic direction for the management, development and expansion of South Africa’s National Botanical Gardens Division and its associated conservation estates. Lead the development and implementation of the National Botanical Garden Expansion Strategy (2019‑2030). Oversee living collections management, including record keeping, accessibility, display, research, knowledge generation, dissemination and interpretation. Manage strategic partnerships related to national botanical gardens. Implement SANBI’s interpretation programme across all gardens. Oversee maintenance and development of infrastructure projects that enhance tourism and commercial revenue potential. Lead off‑site ex situ plant conservation projects and integrate them with on‑site in situ projects. Promote human capital development, change management and transformation, including staff development programmes, succession management and the SANBI Horticultural Career Ladder. Lead development, monitoring and implementation of the Division’s contribution to SANBI’s Corporate Strategic Plan, Annual Performance Plan and Annual Operational Plan. Ensure proper governance, planning, reporting, performance management, occupational health and safety, risk management and compliance with applicable legislation. Facilitate resource mobilisation for maintenance and development of the National Botanical Gardens Division. Qualifications and Requirements Postgraduate degree at NQF level 8 in Life Sciences, Natural Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Botany or a related discipline. Postgraduate degree at NQF level 9 or equivalent is an added advantage. Minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience, including at least 5 years in senior management at director or senior manager level. Competencies Self‑motivated and innovative. In‑depth understanding of national and global botanical garden management. Advanced knowledge of legislation relating to in‑situ and ex‑situ biodiversity conservation. Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel nationally and internationally. Willingness to acquire a Senior Management Service Pre‑Entry Certificate from the National School of Government before assumption of duty.
