Career Opportunities: Tissue Culture Laboratory Technician (2262) Requisition ID 2262 – Posted – Production – Full-Time – Job Posting Country (1) The Laboratory TC Technician is responsible for performing general laboratory processes for in vitro plants and related activities to produce high‑quality in vitro plants. This position will be located in Paarl, South Africa. Job Setting This position is located in a laboratory setting and requires knowledge of aseptic techniques and the ability to handle tissue culture tools and follow safety guidelines. Physical Requirements Ability to remain seated for long periods and wear personal protective equipment (lab coat, hair net, masks, gloves, etc.) all day. Repetitive tasks requiring fine motor skills, sustained concentration, and great attention to detail. Manual dexterity is essential. Ability to work with chemicals. Ability to lift 15 kg. Ability to climb a ladder to store supplies/media. Comfortable working around heat‑generating equipment such as an autoclave. Work in aseptic conditions. Work in a high‑volume environment. Main Duties (Other tasks may be assigned) Performs general plant tissue culture laboratory processes (micropropagation, processing of quarantine material, meristem culture, callus formation, seedling germination) and assists with general laboratory activities (media preparation, seedling distribution) according to established protocols while meeting productivity targets and maintaining high plant quality standards. Applies plant laboratory techniques and follows protocols as directed to ensure compliance with standard operating procedures. Ensures the quality of plantings and complies with contamination standards through self‑monitoring of performance and plant quality. Assists with other tissue culture activities as needed (bagging, parafilm application, transferring plants to designated locations). Follows instructions regarding plant variety, quantity per container, type of medium, and general objectives. Assesses various activities (plant maintenance, shipping, cooling, equipment maintenance). Gathers necessary supplies (culture media containers, plants, tools). Inspects plants and culture containers for signs of contamination before transferring them and removes any contaminated containers. Accurately records data for all activities (task logs, assessments, observations). Immediately reports any issues related to plants (morphology, contaminants, numbers) or TC media (consistency, appearance, labels). Stocks the transfer room with supplies as needed (wet wipes, alcohol, gloves, masks) and updates the inventory sheet. Maintains a clean and safe work environment (workstation, transfer room, culture room, laboratory) in accordance with protocols, policies, and supervisor instructions. Ensures confidentiality in sensitive matters. Promotes an environment of respect, trust, and teamwork in accordance with Fall Creek’s values and code of conduct. Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Training Minimum high school education. At least 1 year of related work experience. Ability to follow detailed instructions, guidelines, and protocols in English and/or Afrikaans. High level of attention to detail and ability to notice small variations. Highly organized in handling materials, equipment, and supplies. Collaborative skills and ability to build positive relationships while working in a team environment. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work in a clean environment with limited outdoor access. Own reliable transport to and from work and regular attendance at the main place of business. Ability to learn new skills and work collaboratively as part of a team.
