Senior Fitter & Turner Position level: Skilled Technical About the Job The CSIR has a vacancy for Senior Fitter & Turner in the Facilities Management and Security Services Portfolio. The purpose of this position is to assemble, fabricate, install, maintain and test mechanical machinery and mechanisms, such as pumps, pipework, valves, motors, boilers and hydraulic systems, based on detailed drawings or specifications. The role carries out planned and breakdown maintenance and refurbishment/reconditioning on mechanical equipment, air compressors, pressure vessels, lifting equipment, boiler plants and any other equipment that the CSIR units may require technical support for. The role also performs rigging, operates truck‑mounted cranes and forklifts, and ensures statutory compliance of all equipment (pressure vessels, boilers, lifting equipment, etc.). The position is based in Pretoria and reports to the Technical Specialist: Mechanical Supervisor. Key Responsibilities Carry out planned mechanical maintenance and repairs to CSIR plant and equipment, including pumps, hydraulic equipment and lifting equipment. Maintain and test statutory equipment (air compressors, boilers, pressure vessels and lifting equipment) and ensure compliance at all times. Perform complex repairs, modifications and installation work on mechanical plant and equipment using technical equipment and hand tools. Ensure all new installations and repairs are performed in accordance with SANS standards and regulatory requirements. Use technical skills to diagnose faults on plant and equipment, determine faults and carry out required repairs with minimal supervision. Conduct root‑cause analysis of mechanical malfunctions or failures of operational equipment. Carry out other technical duties within the mechanical section as may be assigned by the supervisor. Assist units with maintenance and repairs on equipment and ensure it complies with statutory requirements. Maintain a working knowledge and understanding of the OHS Act and bylaws. Ensure all equipment within your area of responsibility is uploaded onto the Computerized Maintenance Management System with up‑to‑date maintenance tasks. Qualifications, Skills and Experience Minimum qualification: N4 Certificate with a minimum of 6 years post‑trade test hands‑on experience. Mechanical Trade Test Certificate. Sound knowledge of maintenance of mechanical equipment. Maintenance and repair knowledge of boilers, cranes, air compressors, mechanical lifting equipment and ability to read and interpret technical drawings and carry out fabrications from drawings. Extensive hands‑on experience in fabrication, machining, welding and rigging. Working knowledge of mechanical building services and their maintenance.
