ROLE PURPOSE The DevOps Developer will bridge the gap between software development and IT operations, ensuring fast, reliable, and secure delivery of applications and infrastructure. The incumbent will design and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automate infrastructure provisioning, and collaborate with development teams to embed DevOps culture and best practices across the organisation. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES CI/CD Pipeline Development Design, build, and maintain automated CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or Azure DevOps. Ensure rapid, reliable, and repeatable software delivery across development, staging, and production environments. Integrate automated testing, code quality gates, and security scanning into pipelines. Infrastructure as Code (IaC) Provision and manage cloud and on‑premise infrastructure using Terraform, Ansible, Pulumi, or CloudFormation. Maintain infrastructure versioning and enforce configuration management standards. Automate environment setup, scaling, and teardown to support agile delivery. Cloud & Container Management Manage containerised workloads using Docker and Kubernetes (EKS, AKS, GKE). Architect and optimise cloud environments on AWS, Azure, or GCP. Implement auto‑scaling, load balancing, and disaster recovery solutions. Monitoring, Observability & Incident Response Implement monitoring, alerting, and logging solutions using Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, or Datadog. Conduct root cause analysis on incidents and implement post‑mortem improvements. Define and track SLOs, SLAs, and error budgets in collaboration with engineering teams. Security & Compliance (DevSecOps) Embed security practices throughout the SDLC — SAST, DAST, dependency scanning, and secrets management. Manage access controls, IAM policies, and network security configurations. Ensure environments comply with POPIA, ISO 27001, and relevant organisational security frameworks. Collaboration & DevOps Culture Partner with developers, QA engineers, and product teams to streamline the software delivery lifecycle. Champion DevOps best practices, promote a shift‑left approach, and conduct internal knowledge‑sharing sessions. Produce and maintain technical documentation for pipelines, environments, and runbooks. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field (NQF Level 7 or higher). Relevant DevOps/Cloud certifications are highly advantageous: AWS DevOps Engineer, Azure DevOps Expert, Google Professional DevOps Engineer, CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator), HashiCorp Terraform Associate. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Minimum 3–5 years of hands‑on DevOps/platform engineering experience in a professional environment. Demonstrated experience managing production‑grade cloud infrastructure on AWS, Azure, or GCP. Proven track record of building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines at scale. Experience working within Agile/Scrum delivery frameworks. Background in software development (Python, Bash, Go, or similar) is advantageous. TECHNICAL COMPETENCES CI/CD & Automation Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, CircleCI, or Bitbucket Pipelines. Scripting in Bash, Python, or PowerShell for automation tasks. Infrastructure & Cloud IaC tools: Terraform, Ansible, Pulumi, CloudFormation, or Chef/Puppet. Cloud platforms: AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform. Networking: VPCs, subnets, DNS, load balancers, firewalls, and VPNs. Containers & Orchestration Docker, Kubernetes (K8s), Helm, and service mesh technologies (Istio, Linkerd). Container registries: ECR, ACR, GCR, or Docker Hub. Monitoring & Observability Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana), Datadog, or New Relic. Distributed tracing with Jaeger, Zipkin, or OpenTelemetry. BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES Problem‑Solving – Rapidly diagnoses production issues and implements durable solutions. Collaboration – Works seamlessly across development, QA, and operations teams. Continuous Improvement – Proactively identifies bottlenecks and drives process optimisation. Communication – Clearly documents systems and conveys technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders. Ownership – Takes accountability for system reliability and delivery pipeline health. Adaptability – Thrives in fast‑paced, evolving technology environments. EEO STATEMENTS Phungela is an equal opportunity employer.
