Our Marketplace is recruiting a sales manager to lead our seller acquisition, onboarding and seller account management teams. The Marketplace Sales Manager reports to the Head of Marketplace based in Cape Town. Purpose of the role Responsible for driving the growth, retention, and optimization of the marketplace business on Takealot, South Africa’s largest online marketplace. This role encompasses the management of Business Development, Seller Onboarding, Account Management, and Merchandising & Promotions teams. Additionally, the role involves developing innovative programs and frameworks to strengthen seller relationships, grow marketplace presence across categories and geographic boundaries, and align the sales team with evolving business needs. Responsibilities Strategic Team Leadership and Operations Oversee and integrate the operations of Business Development, Seller Onboarding, Account Management, and Merchandising & Promotions teams. Provide visionary leadership to a multidisciplinary team, ensuring alignment with the overarching business strategy. Develop and implement targeted training programs to upskill the sales team and align their skill set with dynamic business requirements. Business Development and Marketplace Expansion Close high-impact deals with prominent retailers and brands. Identify and develop emerging categories by signing key partnerships and coordinating launch with internal teams. Seller Retention and Growth Initiatives Design and implement creative strategies to drive seller and brand growth and retention in line with the business strategy. Promotions, Merchandising and Revenue Optimization Direct the Merchandising & Promotions team to optimize promotion planning and execution in line with seasonal campaigns and marketplace priorities. Collaborate across teams to enhance revenue optimization strategies through planned merchandising campaigns and tailored promotional efforts. Stakeholder Collaboration Foster productive partnerships with cross-functional teams such as Marketing, Operations, and Technical Development to deliver end‑to‑end improvements in seller and customer experiences. Act as the primary liaison between sellers and internal stakeholders to ensure seamless marketplace operations. Qualifications and Experience Bachelor’s degree in economics, Business Administration, or similar field. Advanced degrees are advantageous. A minimum of 7 years’ experience in e‑commerce, marketplace management, or related fields. Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Demonstrated success in managing multidisciplinary teams and growing business units. Proven track record in closing high‑profile deals and developing new revenue channels. Strong analytical mindset with a passion for leveraging data to inform meaningful strategies. Proficiency in creating programs and frameworks that drive business growth, improve engagement, and enhance operational efficiencies. Exceptional ability to establish long‑term, value‑centric partnerships. Proactive and adaptable, with a strong focus on innovative strategies for marketplace scalability.
