COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE, ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE (CAES) PSYCHOLOGIST (1 POST) (GRADE 8) CENTRE FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS IN SCIENCE & ENGINEERING (CASSE) 18-MONTH FIXED TERM (1 JULY 2026 – 31 DECEMBER 2027) DURBAN and PIETERMARITZBURG CAMPUSES REFERENCE NUMBER: CASSE PSYC/2026 A fixed term vacancy has become available for a Psychologist in the Centre for Academic Success in Science and Engineering to provide psychosocial services to the Science and Engineering access programme students enrolled in the augmented programmes in CASSE as well as other students in the College. Responsibilities The post is a full-time, fixed-term contract with no benefits attached to this appointment. The post may be renewable, subject to the performance of the incumbent, the availability of external funding and approval by the relevant college management structures. This is a fixed-term position and does not lead to permanent employment at the University. The incumbent will promote and facilitate the holistic development of students by optimizing student well-being and the learning environment through the provision of counselling and development services to students, thereby enhancing student retention and throughput. S/he will coordinate and conduct life skills/student development workshops as well as provide personal, academic and career counselling to CAES students. Must be registered strictly as a part-time student if currently registered for a PhD (doctoral) degree or any other qualification. May undertake part-time employment only with the knowledge and consent of the line manager and, where applicable, with approved Private Remuneration Work. Must be able to work well under pressure, independently and overtime when necessary. Must demonstrate a high level of personal integrity and the ability to handle sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy, while maintaining complete discretion and confidentiality. Should have good interpersonal and client service skills to enable successful liaison and interaction with all University stakeholders. Must have a clean/clear criminal record. The line manager for this post will be the Manager: College Student Support Services. The appointed candidate will also have a dotted-line management to the Head of the Centre for Academic Success in Science and Engineering. The incumbent will be based on the Westville campus but will be expected to travel to the Howard College and Pietermaritzburg campuses to service students from those campuses. Minimum requirements for Psychologist Relevant Masters degree in Counselling, Clinical or Educational Psychology. Two years of relevant work experience, which may include the completed full-time 1-year internship programme for Psychologists, in a Psychological and/or Student Development Environment. Current registration as an independent practitioner (Counselling, Clinical, Education Psychology) with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
