Position Registrar Research Support Coordinator (Post Level 8) – Tygerberg Campus (Ref. TGB11/122/0526) Department Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) Research and Internationalisation Development and Support Division (RIDS) Overview The incumbent will enhance services offered by the Registrar Research Support Office, providing comprehensive research support to specialist registrars and their supervisors within FMHS. The role reports to the Vice‑Dean: Research and Internationalisation (FMHS). Responsibilities Research Capacity Building: Provide a holistic academic research support service to registrars across all disciplines. Develop and facilitate courses, workshops and short information sessions to build registrar research capacity. Assist registrars in navigating and utilising relevant academic and support resources. Maintain a unit webpage and additional resources as needed. Maintain a community of practice among individuals supporting registrar research. Maintain current knowledge of theories and best practices for supporting student success. Update a repository of research‑related resources. Advocacy: Work with FMHS departments, divisions and centres to build a culture of enthusiasm and professionalism around research. Provide capacity‑building services to consultants/supervisors to strengthen registrar research supervision. Maintain a prominent presence in the Faculty, demonstrating the value and significance of registrar research. Serve on relevant faculty committees and research support structures, reporting on and advocating for the unit’s activities within the research community. Ethics Review: Provide consultation and support for ethics applications for registrars. Serve on one of the Health Research Ethics Committees. Funding: Incentivise and support publication of registrar research. Identify and distribute funding opportunities that support registrar research, publication costs, and/or conference attendance. Support application processes for registrars in terms of research funding opportunities. Monitoring & Evaluation: Engage in monitoring and evaluation of the services offered by the unit. Liaising: Write lab (SU Language Centre). Biostats clinic (Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics). Other offices of the RIDS. Tygerberg International. Programme coordinators. Committee for Postgraduate Teaching. Manager: Student Affairs. Academic Student Administration. Job Requirements Master’s degree in health sciences. At least two years’ work experience in a higher education environment. At least two years’ experience supervising/supporting postgraduate students at a master's level in health sciences. Strong interest in the support and development of research capacity and postgraduate student success. Strong academic record and recent publications in accredited academic journals. Good management and academic leadership skills. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication and presentation skills. Experience working with individuals and groups with diverse needs. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders. Ability to work autonomously, take initiative and set goals. Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities. Proficiency with relevant software applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel), databases and web applications. Preferred Qualifications PhD in health sciences. Experience supporting the academic success of registrars. Awareness of the particular demands faced by health professionals and specialists in training. Proficiency in bio‑statistics.
