Purpose of the position As a C&I Team Lead, you will work closely with the Senior Manager: Instrumentation (Cape Town) and his team to ensure that engineering and service requirements are consistently met across all sites. The goal is to position Proconics as a trusted and critical partner to its clients. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver Control and Instrumentation (C&I) discipline outputs while ensuring that the design intent is effectively maintained throughout the project lifecycle. This includes managing interfaces between disciplines and supporting commissioning and optimisation activities, particularly on multidisciplinary projects. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership and oversight during the design, installation, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), and commissioning of control systems and industrial networks across a range of projects and clients. The role requires a strong focus on technical excellence, compliance with project requirements, and adherence to relevant industry standards. Qualifications/experience Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Electrical/Electronic/Control and Instrumentation/Chemical) Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (Pr. Tech Eng / Pr. Eng). Specialised certifications in control systems and networks will be advantageous. Min. 7 years of experience in Control systems & industrial networks engineering within an EPC project environment, with a focus on execution phases. Required outputs and responsibilities Control & Instrumentation Engineering Oversight Lead and manage the Control Systems Engineering team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality work and maintaining technical excellence across all project phases. Provide guidance and direction to ensure effective execution of control and instrumentation engineering activities in line with project requirements. Mentor, coach, and develop team members, ensuring their skills remain aligned with industry standards, emerging technologies, and project needs. Foster a culture of continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and professional growth within the team. Project Planning and Execution Lead and oversee the planning, design, and implementation of control systems and industrial network solutions across multiple projects. Ensure effective coordination of project activities to deliver on scope, schedule, and quality requirements. Ensure all project deliverables comply with client specifications, industry standards, regulatory requirements, and budget constraints. Monitor project progress and proactively address risks, issues, and resource needs to ensure successful project execution. Technical Oversight and Quality Control Provide expert technical guidance on control systems, including PLC, ESD, SCADA, DCS, and industrial networks, ensuring designs are accurate, fit-for-purpose, and aligned with project requirements. Ensure that all instrumentation and control solutions are designed and implemented in compliance with applicable safety standards, industry regulations, and performance specification. Oversee the quality and integrity of engineering deliverables to ensure consistency, functionality, and adherence to established best practices. Cost Management and Resource Allocation Manage project budgets for the C&I team, ensuring the efficient use of resources while maintaining high standards of quality and delivery. Monitor project costs and performance, ensuring alignment with approved budgets and identifying opportunities for optimisation. Oversee procurement and subcontracting activities related to control systems and instrumentation, ensuring cost-effectiveness and compliance with technical specifications. Ensure effective allocation of personnel and resources to meet project timelines, priorities, and deliverables. Risk Management and Compliance Identify, assess, and proactively mitigate risks related to control systems and instrumentation to support successful project delivery. Ensure that potential technical, operational, and safety risks are effectively managed throughout the project lifecycle. Drive compliance with applicable industry standards and regulations (e.g. IEC, ISA) during the design, implementation, and commissioning phases. Ensure all solutions meet required safety, quality, and regulatory requirements, with a strong focus on maintaining safe and compliant operations. Client and Stakeholder Communication Act as the primary point of contact for all control systems and industrial networks matters, ensuring clear, consistent communication with clients and alignment with project objectives. Build and maintain strong client relationships through proactive engagement and effective issue resolution. Coordinate closely with internal departments (e.g. procurement, mechanical/piping, electrical, civil) to ensure integrated planning and seamless project execution. Facilitate collaboration between stakeholders to ensure timely decision-making and alignment across all project interfaces. Knowledge and Skills Required Proven ability to lead, supervise, and develop a C&I engineering team, while driving continuous improvement in the quality and consistency of engineering deliverables to meet both client and business requirements. Strong working knowledge of DCS and ESD systems (e.g. Honeywell, Yokogawa, Emerson) and PLC platforms (e.g. Siemens, Rockwell, Schneider, Beckhoff). Proficiency in HMI and SCADA systems, including design, configuration, and commissioning. Solid understanding of industrial networks and communication technologies, including: TCP/IP, VLANs, routers Fieldbus, Modbus, Profibus, and related bus systems Demonstrated experience in the design, installation, and commissioning of field instrumentation. Strong project management capabilities, including planning, coordination, and execution of multidisciplinary engineering work. Experience in brownfield projects, particularly the replacement and upgrade of DCS and ESD systems in live plant environments. Sound knowledge of petrochemical industry standards, specifications, legislation, and international best practices. Good financial and commercial awareness, including cost control, budgeting, and project financial management.
